I am currently working toward a profound acceptance of my clear and obvious idiocy as the parent of a midteen. Not that it is unwarranted mind you. I really and truly am an idiot. I cannot believe some of the things that have come out of my mouth of late, and I would love to share them with you here so that you too can see the depth of my idiocy. Unfortunately, I cannot do that. I also cannot write this article about dating, or a certain sport, or music lessons, or high school, or academics, or boys or anything having to do with my kids (singular...).
So, I'm afraid all I'm left with is . . . NASCAR . . . which I know very little about. I do know it involves fast "Formula" cars, cocky drivers and huge dollars both in purses and in advertising. That's pretty much it though. Still, I guess that's a good place to start.
So I know this lovely NASCAR . . . car. . . that is trying to make it in the big circuit and it is doing pretty well. It seems to make appropriate choices and takes turns at a relatively safe rate. It pit stops fairly regularly, though not quite as regularly as it used to or as regularly as it's pit crew would like. Still, overall it is a good and smart car. This wonderful and lovely car that has been performing at it's own speed (and doing quite well at that level I think) is feeling the pressure of the big time now as it starts to rub elbows with racier, more souped up, Formula Testosterone cars. These cars, and this one car in particular, have been on the NASCAR circuit a few more years and thousands of miles more than the lovely car. They have a slightly more "juiced" level of . . fuel. . . .shall we say, and they are comfortable at speeds that seem unsafe to their pit crews, but you know how that is, you just can't tell them ANYTHING. So, the lovely car is starting to attempt to take turns and push speeds that some of the cars around it are attempting and quite honestly it is scaring the bejeezus out of it's pit crew.
Now, every time time the pit crew attempts to persuade the lovely car to slow down a bit and take turns at a more reasonable speed they are met with a revving of engines and a squealing of tires and clouds of smoke that make it hard to breathe or sleep at night. Formerly, it seemed that a small "tune up" would be just the ticket to make everything tick along at just the right rate without any undue pressure or stress. Now, any attempts at tune ups are derided as being inspired by "ancient history" or simply rejected out of hand by a puffy "whatever". The pit crew, despite numerous meetings and NASCAR "How To" books, seem unable to make any sense in this new world of the high speed raging engine and the break neck whipping around of turns except to stand with hands clenched around pipe wrenches wishing to do bodily harm to other unnamed NASCAR . . . cars. . . .though recognizing that this course of action would only further distance them from their real desire which is to have the lovely car ease into higher speeds and faster turns over the course of a few years, or decades maybe, at which time it will be fully capable and appropriately outfitted to negotiate such speeds, turns, and . . . speeds.
Of course, the stakes are high, and right at the center of the debate is advertising. Now advertising can be a good thing when done in a responsible and thoughtful manner that neither debases the product (car) nor in any way promises something that cannot and SHOULD not be delivered, like for example, victory in any way, shape or form. We are not interested in victory in any way. We believe in the safe completion of each race in a manner that does no harm to any of the cars so that further NASCAR racing can be attempted with continued safe and fairly tepid results. Is that clear? I mean can we the pit crew make this any more simple? (Pause to check engine oil pressure levels. . . etc.)
Well, that pretty much sums up my discussion of NASCAR as far as I can tell. Next time you watch those cars on TV whipping around the track an unsafe speeds endangering themselves and others just think how their pit crews feel: all that work, all those years, all those selfless decisions possibly squandered by one thoughtless backstretch turn taken at a reckless velocity. . . God, I HATE NASCAR.

Sat. Feb. 9th SOUL LINK RETREAT
Revival: Breathing New Life Into Tired Souls
Because many churches are in a survival mode, holding tightly to a narrow understanding of conventional beliefs, teachings, and devotions, an increasing number of people are seeking sustenance for their souls outside of institutional religion. Soul Link has become a community for many who take their spiritual life seriously, and who want to share their journey with others. It is important to gather with those who share our questions and longings, for the pushes and pulls of our fast-paced lives easily kidnap us from our deeper, spiritual identity and sap the strength of our souls. It is for this reason that Soul Link's winter retreat will be a REVIVAL With Joe Uveges providing the music, we will attempt to enliven our souls through a little singin', a little preachin' (very little), a little healin' (just kidding), and the exchange of ideas regarding various aspects of the spiritual life (God, faith, prayer, etc.). This gathering promises to be entertaining, insightful, and disproportional.
