I was reminded this week of the perils of
working for someone
else. I mean, working for yourself
has its problems as well, some of which I have noted in
my
song "The Self Employment Swing",
but at least you have no one to blame when things don't
go well. A
few weeks ago the Gazette
here in Colorado Springs had a 35 person downsizing. One
of the 35
people cut was Adrian
Stanley, one of a small cadre of music writers at the Gazette
and
someone who has been a gem
for me to work with. I totally understand the bottom line
decisions that corporations must make
to make their businesses profitable. It just hurts when
it is
someone you know and trust.
It will also hurt publicity for local artists because their
simply
aren't enough writers on staff to give
attention to us as well as the big artists coming through.
Once
again we are left to fend for
ourselves publicity wise. . .
That said, please come out and see a show
sometime soon. Blessings all. Joe
Here's the rest of my upcoming shows:
Sunday, March 4th. Rocky Mt. Church of
Religious Science 10 service Hillside Neighborhood Community
Center. Theme "Emergence" with Hellen and Phil
Hollar
Fri. March 16th A house concert in Old
Colorado City at the Old Town Guesthouse (corner of
26th and Colorado on 26th) Showtime: 7:00pm Tickets are
$10 prepay and $12 at the door. (Contact luxury@oldtown-guesthouse.com
for reservations Credit cards will be accepted.) This venue
is really fabulous. Also, you can make it a complete night
by booking a room and spending the night here. Concert attendees
get %10 off a room. The rooms are incredible and the service
even better. If you don't believe me. . .ask my wife Kristen.
Sunday, March 18th. A local legend
who years ago moved to Houston, Texas to pursue his songwriting
dreams, Ken Gaines, will be performing with his music partner
vocalist/violinist Karen Mal at the First Congregational
Church at30 E. St. Vrain just north of downtown on the corner
of Tejon and St. Vrain. Ken has a strong fingerstyle picking
guitar technique, a really powerful voice and a killer batch
of tunes which I've been enjoying for the last month or
so. You can check out his web site at www.kengaines.com
He has also had the priviledge (I would kill for this gig)
of co- hosting the songwriter's night at Anderson Fair in
Houston for the last 7 years! That is THE Anderson Fair
of red brick floor fame where Nanci Griffith recorded her
ridiculously wonderful live CD back about 1992 or so. Ken
and Karen have a lovely vocal blend and their music is just
enough country to make you tap your feet, but not so much
so that you think, "Aw hell, they're too damn Texas".
If you love pool, fishing, or romantic moonlit nights you
will love these guys. I WILL DO A SHORT OPENER FOR THIS
SHOW, as requested...
New Hampshire bound the last weekend in
March.

Russell and Helen Mason

Sue Martin. Technically this concert will be held in a location

told that it is
a wonderful venue where other shows have been held. Having
grown
up on a farm, though, I am preparing myself to not be surprised,
just in case. 7:30pm showtime. $15 at the door. Contact
Cathy
Higgins at cghweb@comcast.net for reservations and furthur
information or call 603-225-8201
The Community Church of Durham (Durham, N.H.)

time
and then will perform a concert that night. $10 at the door.
