On Maggot Farming and the summertime schedule
It certainly feels as if summer is here. I am sweltering in front of
the computer as I spy out my bedroom window at my son (the world's
newest and proudest bike rider) as he careens down LaClede Ave.
Yesterday my wife and I purchased a new bicycle helmet for him ($20)
which I can now see perched jauntily atop the mailbox where I'm sure
it will do wonders protecting both the box and the mail within until
I can go out and scream at him to "Put on that damn helmet". Of
course, being the loving new millenium Dad that I am I will probably
add a word or two to it. No, not "God" . . .
"please".
I am finally, in a slow grunting sort of way, beginning to work on
my next studio recording. I am not excited about it at this point.
It is more like I am being pulled in front of Paul Schwotzers' mics
by the wild horses of my muse who is hissing in my ear "Record these
damn songs you ungrateful, irresponsible slacker, or I'm just not
gonna send you no more!" Sometimes my muse reminds me of a really
haggard bitchy chain smoking small town Texas house wife who has
simply had it "right up to here" with all my whining about music and
why this probably isn't all that good an album idea and my "Hey
baby, the kids are still in school. How's about you and me and the
clean sheets and the cool fan taking a few slow pulls round
the ....etc". She just doesn't want to hear it though, you know?
Anyway, the point is that I think I'm scared. I'm like my son was
yesterday, precariously balancing in a fit of panic that he might
fall. I am similarly precariously balanced, but it is between the
desire to move forward and the fear that there isn't really a point
to forward movement. Some part of me knows that doing another
project, as wonderful or shitty as it might be, is just doing
something that maybe doesn't really get me where my soul wants to
be.
In any case, I am most likely going to have to heed "haggard, bitchy
chain smoking Texas muse" and record these songs because I do think
they all deserve to be recorded, and "she" will make my life a
living hell if I do not do as she wishes. Thank God my real wife is
nothing like her. The album title will be something like the
following: "Christian Songs that Won't Make You Vomit". OK, so it's
a working title. Actually, it will probably include a lot of new
things that I can't seemto keep from writing that include musings on
Jesus ("I'm not waiting for the Second Coming of the Lord"), Holy
Communion ("Recieve Who You Are"), the wandering of soul ( "Goin on
a Spiritual Journey" and "Spellbound"), for fun "Therapy Jar", "Love
the 2nd Time Around" and "Prodigal Son", love songs "In My House"
and "Waltz Time", Steve Hoke's "Lost Canyon" and God knows what
else.... I've thought of recording all the funny songs on one
separate CD. (Self Employment Swing, Crime Stoppers, Folka Polka
etc.) If you have ideas about this I will consider them strongly and
probably not give you credit on the album.
The Olive Branch has decided to stop doing music for the time being
so I apologize to those of you who showed up at the beginning of
May. If you bought CD;s that night as a replacement for hearing me,
I'd appreciate knowing about it, because a bunch of CD's disappeared
and I never got any money for any of them. Good thing I am
independently wealthy and music is just a hobby. (Doh!)
