Last weekend I was priviledged to play a few songs for Paul Sundman's funeral at the First Congregational Church. Paul was a friend of ours who battled ALS for the last 5 plus years. I have been to many funerals in my lifetime. If a funeral can be said to be truly uplifting, this one was.
I think almost everyone that attended this event felt like we'd been robbed of an opportunity to really get to know an extraordinary man. I know that I did. The stories that people told prompted both rolling tears and rollicking laughter.
When my wife Kristen received the news from Jennifer Sundman that Paul had died she wrote Jennifer a cryptic note. "Is there a word that means both sorrow and relief?" That sentence prompted me to ask Kristen to write a song with me for the funeral. This is what we came up with.
I am silent in this garden, where light and shadows play. Streams move in deepest quiet, and time is washed away. Sunshine warms this dreaming ground, and there is pain and peace. Is there a word that means both sorrow and relief?
Is there a name that I could call you, that would not call you back. A name that blesses where you are, but honors what we've had. For it feels like we've lost everything, but found a place to start. Is there a word that means both together and apart?
And all of us are here now, with our hearts open wide. We've come to honor your voice in the story of our lives. . .
I am silent in this garden, where there is hope and grief is there a word that means both sorrow and relief? Is there a word that means both sorrow and relief?
Rest now Paul. Rest. . .
No Ordinary Talent Show ( Press Release)
Society calls them youth "at risk," and when they make mistakes they're often suspended or expelled from schools or sent to detention centers. Most have a hard time fitting in with mainstream public schools. Many feel they've been forgotten. Youth Transformation Center insists there's a better way to improve their behaviors and transform their lives, such as inspiring them to do something positive with their natural talents.
They've invited students from charter and alternative high schools to perform in the Big Dream Talent Show for At Promise Youth on May 31st at Colorado College's Packard Hall. If you go, you'll hear life stories that will make you cry, songs that will lift you up, and see budding young rap stars duke it out for the big dream prize of opening a show for nationally recognized rap star Black Pegasus. Rumor has it there's also a show stopping hip hop dance group and a tribal belly dancer that will bring down the house.
"We work primarily with kids that, through no fault of their own, have grown up with gang or domestic violence, with few positive role models, or immersed in poverty," asserts president and founder Jeannette Holtham. "Yet, among them are some of the most talented and determined kids in our community. Instead of throwing them away, we want to give them some of the same opportunities other kids enjoy. Let's start with a chance to perform in the acoustically magnificent Packard Hall. They'll do the rest and will show our community who they really are."
The question remains, who among the 17 budding young performers will win the top prizes: a scholarship to the Colorado Springs Conservatory, the Colorado Springs Children's Chorale, or The Dance Center, along with the Black Pegasus opportunity.
A star-studded cast of adult performers will join the youth on stage: Internationally renowned storyteller Doug Stevenson; Producer/Director of the Disney Treasures Series and former Executive Producer of the Walt Disney Company Bob Garner who will tell the inspirational story of Walt Disney; poet laureate Stacy Dyson; and Rob Houston, also known as "Black Pegasus" with a rap message the youth will never forget. The show will be emceed by KVOR's Richard Randall.
For further information, visit Youth Transformation Center on the Web at www.youthtransformationcenter.org or call (719) 440-1983.
If you have friends or acquaintences in New Mexico, Missoula or Spokane please forward my schedule to them and ask them to come out and see me. All these shows are open to the public. I can't tell you what a joy it is to have someone come up to me at a show and say, "My friend, (your name here), told me to come check you out. I am so glad I did."
