Cats, birds and small children have an uneasy relationship in the
springtime. I had the opportunity to witnessthis first hand last
month when my son and his two new friends, Miller and Noble, saved a
baby bird from beingeaten by our mischievous cat Piper. The saving
was dramatic what with jaw prying and smoothing of feathersbut the
bird seemed in pretty good shape overall. The boys wanted to tend to
it before we placed it back in the nest we thought it may have
fallen from so I explained that baby birds like small insects,
grubs, worms, bugs of any kind. I sent them out on a hunt expecting
them to give up fairly quickly.About 5 minutes later they came in
with a small cup and about 5 tiny crawling creatures which I quickly
recognized as fly larvae. I immediately asked where they had gotten
them and they said "the compost pile".I explained that "maggots",
the more common term, tend to live off dead flesh and other rather
disgusting stuff, but for birds they probably would be fine food. I
also made the mistake of noting that I had read that in other parts
of the world, humans on occasion would eat grubs and fly larvae as a
source of protein becausethe outside of the insect my be dirty, but
the inside probably is edible. This kind of honesty is never
rewarded in parental life.
The bird survived the tweezer fed maggots which it did in fact eat
and the mother robin helped with the healing by bringing dozens of
baby tree caterpillars and shoving them down the young bird's throat
in a manner that reminds me of my own occasional forcefeeding of my
children, except that I am shoving values down their intellectual
gullets. I forgot about maggots.
Last week as I was "working" on a song (oxymoron?), my parental
antennae arose as I listened to water running in the bathroom and
boys excited voices counting and and exclaiming "wow, look at that
one go". Upon entering the bathroom I saw three boys hunched over
the 1/4 filled sink, swirling water with grubby hands(grubby, oh how
I wish...) as they attempted to wash the outsides of their newly
found (and HUGE) fly larvae.I tried to stay calm as my son tactfully
explained that since the outsides are dirty, it would be ok to play
with them if they washed them first, "isn't that right Dad?". I
didn't even ask where they got them. Part of me wanted to laugh (and
did) and part of me wanted to throw $20 into a therapy jar. I told
them they could not play with maggots and that they needed to take
them back outside and put them back where they found them.
Next month's edition. "Fly infestation at 222 LaClede". Here's the
digs on gigs. Thanks to the 1200 people who turned up at America the
B. Park two nights ago. Blessings
