"Swimmer's Ear, The RUB, etc. "

We took our first true family vacation last week. Though it still incorporated extended family members (a theme in our family) it was still pretty darn incredible. We flew to Puerta Vallarta and spent a week in a posh resort aptly named "Paradise Village". We were a group numbering 24, all family on my wife's side. It was a chunk of change, but the cost of the room was gifted to all the kids and grandkids by my wife's parents who traded a time share in Breckenridge for this opportunity. Yeah, pretty damn cool, huh?

Of course there were a few down sides. Sun burns were a problem. A minor case of Montezuma's Revenge attacked many of our party, setting in on or about day number 4. We were unable to dry out our bathing suits for days on end. Hmmm, that's about it. Oh yeah. One more thing. The oldest 6 of the first cousins are all mid to later adolescent girls who found their most comfortable attire to be bikinis. Unlike what we were told when discussing this at length with the management the resort allowed adolescent boys into the facility. They were able to wander around indiscriminately. There was no supervision unless it was provided by. . .by . . . the PARENTS themselves. As you can imagine, this was a rather shocking and dispiriting realization. We were, however, able to summon the presence and fortitude to persevere in our watchfulness of our "vulnerable?" progeny through a delightful mixture of wine, beer, coffee, dark chocolate and an occasional cigar. Most effective though was simply to don certain undercover type disguises whose real purpose was to embarass our children and any prospective boys by making us look ridiculous. It worked beautifully. It is amazing how quickly adolescents can recognize the potential uncoolness of being in any way associated with or even near an adult dressed in a ratty "Phelps Agway" T shirt, floppy hat, and flip flops dating back to 1978. Uncoolnesss, the gift that just keeps on giving. BAHHHAHHHHHAHAHHAA.

Ok one other down side. I came back with a case of "Swimmer's Ear". It has gotten so bad (pain and swelling) that I sought medical help and was told I had an infection (duh!). With prescription in hand I sped to Safeway to get my ear drops only to be told. . . $123. Ear drops for God sakes! I almost had a bout of the Montezuma Revenge right there on the floor. I left in despair, called around and found the best price, still $107, at another national chain I am embarassed to reveal to you. I was hurting and Kristen, ever the voice of reason in the house, pointed out that without the steroid part of the prescription I might be able to find the antibiotic for $50, but the steriod is what will hasten swelling reduction and pain relief. Well, hell yes then.

At 8 Am this morning, after my first night of restful sleep in 3 days, I decided that maybe the United States health care system is a bit overly capitalistic and some drug company made a killing on me, but Lord, it was worth every penny.

One other bit of news. Last week I received a batch of CDs from a publishing company out of California. I was included on a compilation disc of artist redos of traditional Christian songs. The cut I submitted was "Were You There", the classic song about Jesus' crucifixtion. It is a very strong cut, but today I finally listened to the rest of the CD. I was blown away. Almost every cut is really incredible, as in, national level act incredible. By the time I got to my cut at #5 (nicely placed), I was afraid it wouldn't measure up, but no worries. It sounds amazing. Janet Fischer, the publisher and owner of Goodnight Kiss Music, has created an awesome collection of songs. You can download them by visiting .. . . . I don't know yet. . . .sorry.
