I would like to now publically admit that I am not exactly color savvy. For those of you who've watched me perform for years you know that I am most comfortable in blue jeans and a black pullover so when the subject of painting the outside of our house came up a month ago I'm thinking "Hey, blue, with black trim, right?"
Kristen and Kate came back with some lovely color ideas. Kristen first suggested we go with white, and white trim. Of course Katie and I derided this as boring. (In retrospect I'm thinking white on white, very safe. Very safe.) What we decided to go with instead was a deep cream for a base, with lavendar and purple trim tones. You see color schemes like this on Victorian's all the time right? We do not own a Victorian though. It is more of a NE cottage look we have going. We headed to Home Depot over the July 4th weekend and bought 10 gallons of paint (on sale) and started the giant house prep. 5 Days and "hundreds of man hours" later we were ready to paint. My cousin Steve Uveges, the brilliant local contractor and owner of "Fruition Company" (235-2471), who knows more about, well, everything (except music) than me, suggested starting from the top down so we did. Now here is where things start to go bad.
Kristen asked me what I'd like to do for the stucco area above our shingles that makes up the "gabled area" under the angle of our roof line. I'm thinking "Well, if my choices are cream, lavendar, or purple, I think we should shake things up a bit and we will paint that area . . . .hmmm. . . . purple seems to heavy, the rest of the house is cream, why not lavendar?" Now, when I've told this story to friends and fans at shows, and specifically to women, there is a look that comes across their faces at this point in the story. I would describe that look as one of polite disbelief with just a hint of . . . what would the word be, maybe. . .
horror? Yes, horror I think is the word I'm looking for. Indeed, 3 out of the first 4 women I told this too, all had the same look and 2 of them wanted directions to our house so they could see this color scheme in person. Anyway, it gets worse.
If I had to describe to you what geometric shape is created by the 2 angles of a roof line (basically coming down at opposing angles, and the top of the line of shingles that make up the main portion of our house, most people would immediately identify this shape as a triangle. I did not. I'm thinking all along that this is a STUCCO area that needs spice, that needs a voice, that needs to be "free" from the rest of the shingled portion of our house. I never thought of it as a triangle, I swear. Upon completing the 2nd coat of lavendar though, and then completing the cream below it, and then trimming out the windows in lavendar and purple, it occurred to Kristen exactly what had happenned. She actually put the 2 words together in bed that night. They were not the 2 words I was hoping for, but that is another story. The 2 words were this: "lanvendar triangle". When she actually said those 2 words together and then repeated them again and again, I realized that I had made a tremendous color scheme error. We had 2 giant lavendar triangles on the two sides of our house and I think we all know that having 2 lavendar triangles on the side of your house when the rest of your house is cream is, well, gay.
Now I am thinking to myself, "Hey, I'm in touch with my inner feminine. I can handle this look. It really isn't that bad, is it?"
Well, folks, let me tell you. It is that bad. It looks really bad, and in conjunction with the purple and lavendar trim on the windows, it almost looks . . . let me find the right word. . . freakish, and really gay, or lesbian maybe. So today, after "sitting" with it for a week and a half or so, I'm going back up on the ladders and I'm going to repaint the giant triangles. We've decided to go with white, and white trim. . . . just kidding. We're keeping the cream, but we're going with white trim. It will look more "cottagey", and less, well, gay. . . or lesbian. Of course, I'd like to say to my fan base (which is made up primarily of Christians, Unitarians, Gays and Lesbians) please don't think that I'm in any way decrying the pink or lavendar triangle color theme of the "Out and Proud" crowd. It just wasn't working for us here at 222 LaClede Ave. For $5 you can purchase admission to see other less documented color faux pas' in our home.
I left out one thing. Our next door neighbors, Josh and Jess who we love and who are a lot more fun and exciting and risky than we are have a color scheme that kind of asks us to tone down our lavendar look anyway. They are a vibrant yellow with bright green trim. It is kind of like a giant billboard for John Deere, or maybe a Green Bay Packers theme. Yin and Yang, right? Except that I just am not comfortable being the "Yin" in this equation. Black and Blue? Now THAT I understand.
I've just recieved a shipment of the compilation CD's from "Goodnight Kiss" that include my version of "Were You There" along with 13 other really remarkable traditional Christian tunes done in very cool ways. ("ALTARnative Music: Songs of Christian Faith".) My favorite, Johnny English, doing "Jesus Loves Me". He sounds just like Tom Waits ripping up some Aussie bar tune. The album is really a neat compilation. Regular $15 to Joe Uveges 222 LaClede Ave. CS CO 80906 for orders. Here's the digs on gigs. . . . There are a couple new ones.
