CABOOM!!!

First thing's first. Check out my new web site. www.joeuveges.com Designed by Eric Murphy (www.2doors.com)

I am appropriately grateful for this opportunity to share with you some of the delightful and/or sordid intracacies of my music career and personal life. It is the odd kind of sharing that is generally only afforded those who make it onto Oprah, at least that's what I'm told. We haven't had a television for 16 years now so I honestly wouldn't know. Kristen and I decided it would just be easier to raise our kids in a "televisionless" environment. When we got serious about marraige/family we "threw out" the TV. Well, technically, we didn't have to because neither of us had one when we were dating, but I've often thought what a pleasure it would be to organize a party at which we came together to maybe throw away our TV's . . .or blow them up . . . or shoot them with 12 guage shotguns. . . or drown them. . . or choke them with our bare hands . . .or launch them into the air with catapaults after imbedding them with a small explosive device only to have them forcefully CABOOM on impact scattering tubes and plastic in every direction. Dude, now THAT would be happenning. Unfortunately when I mention these ideas to friends I am met with looks of fear and confusion. Oh.

Life without television is not dramatically different than life with it I guess. We do read a lot more, often out loud, and my daughter is voracious about books. I'm not sure we actually converse more than the average American family, or that the quality of the conversation is dramatically deeper. We do not tend to discuss the latest episode of "24" or who was featured on "Good Morning America, but we do occasionally rent DVD's of entire seasons of TV programs. I would give you some examples of these shows, but I would be killed by my family (daughter) for being too forthcoming in my newsletter. The great thing about watching programs on DVD is that there is no advertising. I know the programs may not be all that wholesome, but to be able to skip the advertisements is wonderful and makes me feel like we are still doing something to protect the kids from mass media.

There is also an element of self protection. It is dramatically easier to not have the ongoing distraction of omnipresent programing to pull me away from my work as a musician. (I am writing that with a straight face.) Sure, I miss out on seeing the Rockies and Broncos live and there are moments when I head up to the Sports Page for a quick beer if something is happenning that I absolutely must take in. My son and I went up there to see the last game of the World Cup together. It was great fun for him even though he is only 6 years old and he doesn't know anything about Italy or France. We had burgers and fries. We learned how to head butt an opponent. He watched me do a couple beers and a couple shots and then stagger in the parking lot. Anyway, it was pretty fun. (I'm joking.) Where was I? I really believe it is difficult for me as a guy when exposed to lots of stimuli to not take it in and have it affect my thinking. Of course, I am thinking of the stimuli of female bodies primarily, but there are other forms of stimuli as well. For example, I don't have to be inundated with reminders that my car is very uncool and that I really need to own another one. I don't have the constant stimuli of watching human suffering unfold before my eyes as my Israeli and Palestinian brothers and sisters wound and kill eachother. When I see those images I find myself taking sides, trying to figure it out, and feeling a deep sense of hopelessness. It is much easier to do the ongoing work of loving them and forgiving them when I don't actually have to see their anguished or angry faces staring back at me from the tube. Maybe I'm wrong, though Maybe being constantly exposed to human suffering and doing the inner work that must dovetail that type of exposure IS a path to growth. Or course, doing that work in person would be the best application. Still, maybe TV has certain unanticipated advantages that I've not taken into consideration, and because of that I can see that a 32" TV would be FAR more spiritually uplifting than any old 17" TV would be. Better yet, think of the spiritual growth I might attain with a 44" digital flat screen! I will be far more able to love and forgive the Rockies when I can see the real digitally enhanced anguish on the face of Todd Helton and company as they blow another great opportunity to win and thereby drag themselves out of the cellar of the National League West. Will I not be able to call this life an illusion that much more easily when I can see the illusion in digital clarity? Yes, friends, I have seen the light. Spiritual growth through focused television watching. What until I tell my family! "Oh Kristen"....!
