So I pulled out of my driveway about 3 weeks ago on the way to a show at the Fine Arts Center. I didn't realize I had not fully latched the trunk of my minivan which was filled with gigging material. (I fear this kind of thing will happen more and more as I push into my later years.) I turned the corner off of LaClede, stopped at Arbor and Cheyenne Blvd. When I pulled onto Cheyenne I heard this strange sound. I kind of looked around, thought some stuff in my car was settling and went on my way. 1/4 of a mile down the road I stopped at the intersection for S. Tejon St. As I pulled through, a car beeped and some guy leaned out the window to tell me I'd dropped something out of my van. I looked back in horror and saw that my trunk had popped up and one of my Mackie 450 powered mains had fallen out. I whipped around, sped the 1/4 of a mile back to Arbor. It was gone. In one minute's time someone had picked it up and taken it.
I was sick to my stomach at first, then a bit sheepish, then outraged, then strangely detached. I did not report it to the police. I guess I wasn't certain it technically could be considered stolen. Then I figured if someone was so hard up that they would see this speaker fall out of my van and race to pick it up before I'd returned then they must really need the cash more than I do. I guess the one thing that does strike me is this. When I was a kid, the idea of picking up something on the street that didn't belong to me was simply unthinkable, let alone racing to pick it up before the person came back. We would always try to find the owner of the item to return it to them.
Once, while backpacking around Mexico, I happened to catch a pair of locals in Agua Azul who had just snuck up and pinched the purse of my traveling companion. I chased them down and actually caught one of them. I took the bag he was carrying, he took off and I figured that was the best I could do. In the bag was the woman's purse, and a bunch of other stuff as well including a beautiful 35mm camera and a rain breaker. The next day, I hiked down the river stopping to ask if anyone had had these items stolen. No one claimed the camera, someone did claim the rain breaker. I ended up with a camera for my trouble, and a fair amount of good karma as well as good wishes from my Danish traveling companion.
All this to say, woah, what have we become? I know times are hard for some folks, but . . . well. . . I'm not sure what to make of it. If you come and buy some CD's at an upcoming show, about 40 CD's worth will get me a new speaker. Christmas is just around the corner. . . .and who knows, maybe a powered Mackie 450 is as well. Blessings all. . . j
Digs on Gigs:
Wed. Sept. 10th 6-7:30pm Hancock Senior Center 1514 N. Hancock Ave. The last outdoor concert of the Season. On Hancock about 2 blocks north of Uintah Ave. in Colorado Springs. Although we will obviously do some original material, this night will be dedicated to tunes that seniors would especially find entertaining. All are welcome. Since it is an outdoor event, bring a lawn chair and a sack dinner. The showmobile will be in the parking lot of the senior center. Tours of the senior center will be given. This is a very cool place for anyone in their mid 50's and up but all are welcome. I've played here 5-6 times in the last 5 years. With KJ and Susan.
My friend Elise Eagle asked me to announce Cathy Bolton's concert to you. In Elise's words: "Cathy Bolton is Music Director for the Conversations With God Foundation and has been singing for Neale Donald Walsh for over ten years. Cathy will be singing at Unity on Mesa Rd. Sat. Sept. 20th 7:30pm. "The R-U-B" in concert. Community for Spiritual Living(CSL), at the corner of Jeanine and Academy, about 3 blocks north of North Carefree, in Colorado Springs.
