A huge welcome to all you new Northwesterners and new
Northeasterners. I can't thank you enough for the delightful time I
was shown at every venue I played. If you'd like to host a show
next year please shoot me an email or visit my web site which has
a "House Concert How To" on it. Just click on www.joeuveges.com
Also, see the end for a Peter Mayer update.
Today I would like to address the issue of premarital sex.
I am excited to explain my feelings about this issue to you since I
seem to be having little success in having any kind of meaningful
dialogue about it with my 14 year old daughter (she who must not be
named - or SWMNBN). At the end of one of my N.W. shows I did a
few sing along's just to make everyone feel like they were part of
the scene. Someone suggested "Peaceful Easy Feeling" which is a
song I know and can play fairly well. We broke into the song and
two lines into it I was faced with a moral crises.
Now, for those of you who are not parents, this is
probably going to sound like idiocy but for those of you who are
parents you will understand perfectly. Everyday when we get into
the car and turn the radio on, my wife and I find ourselves
listening to the station that "SWMNBN" wants to hear. As you can
imagine, we have left behind the Christian pop, the "classic rock"
station, and KRCC in favor of the more techno sound of hip-hop and a
kind of "pop rap". Now, don't get me wrong, there is some stuff
there I can handle. I am not a complete fuddy dud and I find that
some of the grooves are well laid. . .I mean. . . really cool.
Lyrically, though, I have to admit I'm a bit taken aback. Sure, my
generation had many songs that were similarly affixed on the idea
of sex or as my Dad used to term it "The Marital Act". We had
that delightful Maria Muldaur hit, "Midnight on the Oasis" and then
there was "Afternoon Delight", and who can forget Springsteen's
second verse of "Born to Run" with that, "Wendy let me in I wanna
be your friend I wanna guard your dreams and visions. Just wrap
your legs round these velvet rims and strap your hands
cross my engines. . .etc". Now that's a visual. I know we can
all come up with similar songs from our respective generations.
(Here's a nice example from the 1920's. "Don't sit under the apple
tree with anyone else but me." C'mon, for God's sake,
we all know what that was really about. All that talk about apples
and sitting and . . .and apples!)
The songs I am faced with on pop radio today, far beyond
apples and sitting, are so fraught erotic visuals that even SWMNBN
feels a bit embarrassed. Sometimes, she will turn the radio down
during the more evocative lyrics . . . as if I can't rhyme! This
is the bane of being the daughter of a songwriter. I can anticipate
where the lyric is going and, quite honestly, it embarrasses us
both. When, for ex. an artist raps "Get me hard and I'm your
cinder block man." I think we can all intuit that he's not talking
about masonry or home construction, here. When I hear a female
vocalist sing; "Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me.
Don't you wish your girlfriend was a freak like me." I will admit,
that yes, yes, at times I wish my girlfriend was a "freak" like
you! Of course, I'm not exactly sure what she is referring to when
she uses the term "freak" but I'm open to suggestions.
The
point I am trying to make is that my "girlfriend" is in fact my
WIFE. My wife and I are in this thing called a "committed
marriage" which is this wonderful, magical, difficult, powerful,
sexy, fun, boring, rich beyond measure relationship that is not
easily quantifiable in. . ."freak". . . units. . .whatever they
might be. When an artist sings; "Grab me a handful, all I want
is a sample" from "Slow Motion For Me" I don't think he's talking
about his wife, nor is the artist who is singing "Girl, I'm shakin
and breaking and movin trying to get to you and that booty
trying to get to you and that booty." Admittedly, if I
thought "shakin, breakin and movin" would work
for me on the so called "marital booty hunt" I would do it in a
heartbeat. I don't think "marital booty" is what the artist
is attempting to access though.
Anyway, there I was last week in Missoula, Montana,
singing "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and the second line is, well, you
know! ". . .and I wanna sleep with you in the desert tonight, with
a million stars all around." So I sang the line, "and I wanna
sleep with you in the desert tonight," and immediately in that
crises of fatherhood and in communion with fathers everywhere who
are just trying to protect their daughters from young men who are
just like we were when we were young interjected "Because we're
MARRIED!. . . with a million stars . . .etc." Hey, I just
couldn't help it. I know it was infantile. I know I can't keep
her from growing up. Hell, she was 1100 miles away and couldn't
even hear what I was saying, but I could feel the camaraderie and
support (and laughter) from the parents in the room. It was like I
gave voice to an inner prompting that we all feel but are embarrassed
to speak out loud, and what I think we want to say is this:
Please, please, my child, be so very careful with this wonderful
precious body of yours because there is so much possibility
for pain and heartache in that seductive world of casual,
uncommitted sex. Please, please be patient. And most of all,
try to remember that, when we sing about body parts and what we'd
like to do with/to them, that there are human beings connected to
these body parts. Real human beings who are filled with hopes and
fears and wounds and joys and sorrows and possibilities and
disappointments and maybe, after this moment, regret. So please,
please, please be careful. And better yet . . . just wait until
you are married!
I'm done now.
I only have 3 shows I'm doing that are in any way public Everything
else is private, but I do have openings for Christmas shows if you
would like to book something. You can order my new two disc CD
which will probably NOT be done in time for Christmas
by sending me a check for $21.50. I'll keep you posted if Paul and
I make huge progress in the next couple weeks.
